COMBS

What is an optical frequency comb? It is a frequency ruler made out of light, from infrared to ultraviolet to visible light, and has enabled the most precise measurement the world has ever seen. It can be used to look for planets, increase internet data speeds, rapidly measure greenhouse gases, and more accurately map earthquake-prone areas.

However, today’s optical frequency combs are large, expensive and complex and remain trapped in specialist laboratories. The extraordinary potential of the optical frequency comb remains largely untapped. COMBS are on a mission to revolutionise this technology, making it readily available and accessible for all. They have introduced the first miniaturised optical frequency comb, called microcombs, which is a small chip and continue to work towards pushing it even further.

The symbol in the logo represents the spectrum of optical frequencies that are evenly spaced out to reflect the ‘comb’. We relied on imagery to showcase the impact on the real world by using textural images of nature and technology and to also illustrate how the measurement can span from microscopic to into space. The identity demonstrates breakthrough science by using sharp angles and precise points in combination with dynamic long-exposure imagery representing the spectra of light.
